A climate rally is scheduled for this Saturday morning at Centennial Square.

Global Day for Climate Justice, organized by Climate Justice Victoria, will take place at 11 a.m. with the intention to hold leaders accountable at the global climate conference (COP26) in Glasgow.

COP26 is the United Nations Climate Change conference that has had leaders from around the globe put forth their initiatives and intentions to help mitigate climate change. It will take place until November 12th.

A majority of Prime Minister Trudeau’s climate promises for Canada included ending deforestation by 2030, setting stronger prices on pollution, reducing methane emissions in the oil and gas sector, and having net zero emissions by 2050.

Climate Justice Victoria commented on the importance such a conference makes and criticized the lack of action so far.

“The decisions made at COP26 will shape how governments respond (or not) to the climate crisis. They will decide who is to be sacrificed, who will escape and who will make a profit,” Climate Justice Victoria said on their website.

“So far, governments have done too little too late: colluding with corporations and hiding behind green washed ‘solutions’ that actually don’t exist yet, that don’t address the scale of the problem, and in many cases rely on more exploitation of people and the planet.”

Organizers said that one goal of the rally is to bring on collective action, solidarity and coordination, from local communities to create change on international levels.
