A beloved family dog has died following a kitchen fire in Colwood Thursday morning.

Colwood Fire Rescue Acting Fire Chief Greg Chow told Victoria Buzz the owner of the residence returned home to find smoke in the house.

Fire crews were dispatched just after 9 a.m. to the 2300-block of Sooke Road. Chow said five trucks and 22 firefighters from Colwood, View Royal and Langford were on the scene.

The investigation into the cause is ongoing. The damage is estimated at over $100,000.

Photos from the scene showed three firefighters attempted to resuscitate the dog, however,  despite all efforts, the family pet perished in the fire.

“All of our members are saddened by the loss of the family’s pet but find comfort that no others were injured in this blaze,” said Chow.

Residents of the other suite were allowed to return home. They told Victoria Buzz they were on their way out the door for the day when the blaze broke out.

The residents of the damaged suite won’t be able to return home for several days as fire crews continue to investigate the cause of the fire.

West Shore fire crews were also called to another house fire in the 1500-block of Glentana Road in View Royal just after midnight. The fire was limited to one bedroom because of a  quick response by firefighters.
