Talk about a short-lived crime.

A man who stole a jerry can of gas from a pickup truck this week was unaware a plainclothes police officer was nearby.

The crime occurred just after 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the 1200-block of Goldstream Avenue.

The officer was in the area for on an unrelated matter when he saw a man wearing a camouflage jacket acting suspiciously and peeking into a pickup truck parked in a private driveway.

The man lowered his hoodie and put a face mask on before grabbing a large jerry can of gasoline from the pick up truck and started running away.

“The suspect did not make it very far before being arrested,” said Cst. Alex Berube, spokesperson for the West Shore RCMP.

“He literally tried to run but couldn’t hide.”

The jerry can of gas was immediately returned to the owner.

The 38-year Langford man was later released and is set to appear in court on February 10th.
