UPDATE: The southbound lanes of the Pat Bay Highway have reopened to traffic after a collision claimed the life of a man Monday morning.
The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. and the highway remained closed until about 4 p.m. as officers investigated.
Police are still trying to determine why the individual was on the highway.

The southbound lanes of the Pat Bay Highway are closed near the BC Ferries Swartz Bay ferry terminal following a fatal collision between a semi-truck and pedestrian.
The incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. Monday morning on the Pat Bay highway south of Lands End Road.
A person on the highway was struck by semi-truck, though it’s unclear whether or not they were attempting to cross the roadway at this time.
Traffic is being routed down Lands End to West Saanich Road.
In a media release, North Saanich Sidney RCMP said it is unknown what would have caused the victim to be on the highway.
They are asking for anyone who witnessed the collision, or anyone who saw the man prior to the crash, to call them.
In addition, the police are asking for dashcam footage taken between 8 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. this morning.
Photos from the scene show a body covered up and officers are erecting a tent over the body.
The BC Coroners Service is on scene assisting in the investigation.
No other details are available at this time, however, the section of highway will likely remain closed for several hours.
