Nanaimo RCMP say a homicide at a local coffee shop Saturday morning appears to have been random.

Police were originally called to Buzz Coffee House on Rutherford Road, near the Island Highway around 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 12th for a wellbeing check.

When officers arrived, they found an adult man dead, as well as another man, who was arrested and remains in custody.

The business remains closed while forensic investigators examine the scene. Additionally, Cst. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP said investigators from the Serious Crime Unit have also carried out two search warrants in connection to the homicide.

As of Sunday afternoon, O’Brien said investigators have not established any clear link between the two people involved.

“Investigators are confident that based on the evidence collected to date, there was no connection between the deceased and the individual arrested at the scene.”

“This was a random incident with a tragic outcome.”

Police have not released the identity of either man.

Police are asking anyone who arrived at Buzz Coffee House between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Saturday and saw anything that could be considered suspicious to contact Nanaimo RCMP and quote file number 2022-4898.
