Stolen muffin leads to arrest of man who was banned from Vancouver Island

A 29-year-old man couldn’t resist the temptation of a muffin from a nearby coffee shop at the West Shore Town Centre, even if it meant breaching his court-ordered conditions.

On February 8th, at about 10:45 p.m., a RCMP officer was parked at the West Shore Town Centre when a bystander approached him to report a person whom he believed had just stolen a muffin from a nearby coffee shop.

“With that information, the officer approached the male and observed that he was drinking alcohol from an opened container – which is prohibited under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act,” Cst Meghan Groulx said in a media release.

When officers identified him, it was determined he had multiple warrants for his arrest.

He was also on a Release Order out of Saanich, which included conditions to not be on Vancouver Island. He was also ordered not to consume or be in possession of drugs or alcohol.

The 29-year-old man of no fixed address was taken into custody and held for court later the next day.

“This goes to show what can be accomplished when the community reports suspicious activity to police, even when it’s a minor occurrence,” said Insp. Stephen Rose, the operations officer of West Shore RCMP.
