Two Greater Victoria School District trustees suspended following reports of bullying and harassment

Following misconduct allegations, two board trustees with the Greater Victoria School District (SD61) are facing censure and suspension.

According to the school district, trustees Diane McNally and Rob Paynter are barred from their duties until October.

In a statement, SD61 says its board of education was made aware of two formal complaints about bullying and harassment towards staff “related to disparaging comments made publicly.”

The board then held a closed meeting to consider the allegations, launching a third-party investigation “with a highly experienced lawyer and investigator” due to the seriousness of the situation.

“A thorough investigation and subsequent report substantiated the claims of misconduct,” SD61 said.

“The board is reviewing the trustee code of conduct and bylaws to ensure appropriate measures are in place to address these types of behaviours.”

The school district adds that it has a zero-tolerance for bullying, noting all SD61 students and staff “deserve to feel safe when they enter our schools and workplace.”
