IIO and VIIMCU investigating sudden death of child in Victoria

The sudden death of a Victoria child Thursday night has spurred a multi-agency investigation.

According to VicPD, the March 26th death is being investigated by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU), and the BC Coroners service.

A media release by the IIO said VicPD responded to a request to conduct a wellness-check early Thursday morning on a mother and child.

Then, later that same day, the woman called Emergency Health Services about the child; both were taken to hospital, but the child died.

The location of the incident was in the 900-block of Johnson Street.

VicPD also released a statement on Saturday stating they had received a call to emergency services at 7 p.m. Thursday, however, police say the wellness-check was conducted Wednesday evening.

At 9 p.m. Thursday, officers were called to Victoria General Hospital after the child died.

The IIO, a police oversight body for BC, were called in and are investigating the incident to determine if police action or inaction contributed to the death—a standard process when someone is hurt or killed during or shortly after an encounter with police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the IIO Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
