Island Health declares COVID-19 outbreaks at three Vancouver Island long-term care homes

Island Health declared COVID-19 outbreaks at three long-term care homes this week.

According to the health authority, the following long-term care homes have been affected:

The Berwick House Gordon Head long-term care home in Victoria has had four residents test positive. 

The outbreak declaration is limited to the Brio unit.

The Heights at Mt. View long-term care home in Victoria has had six residents test positive. 

The outbreak declaration is limited to the west wing on the 6th floor. 

Greenwoods long-term care home on Salt Spring Island has had seventeen resident cases and five staff members test positive.

The cases have been confirmed via PCR testing or follow-up from Island Health’s case and contact management team.

The following outbreak response protocols have been implemented at sites:

  • Essential visits and single designated visitor visits will continue
  • No congregate dining or group activities
  • Staff movement will be limited wherever possible
  • Enhanced cleaning and infection control measures will continue
  • Patients, families and staff are being notified
  • Enhanced screening of all staff and patients for symptoms

In addition to the new outbreaks, Island Health said the outbreaks at Glacier View Lodge in Courtenay, Sidney All Care in Sidney, Wexford Creek in Nanaimo and Veterans Memorial Lodge in Victoria have been declared over. 

At the time of publication, there are currently 12 COVID-19 health care outbreaks in the Island Health region.
