One person is in custody following a stabbing in downtown Victoria early this morning.
The incident occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning in the 500-block of Yates Street. Police said they received reports a man was stabbed.
Arriving officers found located the man suffering from life-threatening injuries and provided emergency first aid until paramedics arrived.
The victim was transported to hospital, but later died from his injuries.
Following the man’s death, detectives with VicPD’s Major Crimes unit, along with officers from VicPD’s Forensic Identification Services, were called to the scene and continued the investigation.
This was also in coordination with the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU), who are now in charge of the investigation.
About half an hour after the incident, around 2 a.m., VicPD officers identified a suspect and located him shortly later, then arrested him.
The BC Coroners Service is continuing an independent investigation to determine all of the facts surrounding the death.
Investigators said they believe this is an isolated incident and there is no risk to the public.
