The quick actions of a police dog and his handler led to the discovery of a missing child in Port Alberni last week.

At approximately 2:10 p.m. on Thursday, March 24th, RCMP received a call that a 10-year-old boy had gone missing in the trails at Maplehurst Park.

Both uniformed and plain-clothes officers responded to the area with police dog Jammer and his handler Constable Barlett. Alberni Valley Rescue Squad were also called to assist.

“A missing child will always garner a large response from officers,” said Constable Richard Johns, Media Relations Officer with Port Alberni RCMP.

“This instance had additional factors which made locating this young boy even more urgent.”

Jammer picked up a track quickly upon arriving on scene which led officers to the boy just off the main trail. The boy was safe, healthy and unharmed although a bit scared.

Port Alberni RCMP remind the public it is never too early to call police about a missing person.
