The ongoing investigation into a 2020 Duncan homicide has made progress this week, with the arrest of 45-year-old Andrew Steve Alphonse.

According to the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU), they, along with the assistance of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP, arrested Alphonse in connection to the case.

On January 20th 2020, police responded to reports of an assault inside a residence on Mulaqw Road on Cowichan Tribes land.

When officers arrived on site, they found a 53-year-old man who was seriously injured. First aid was administered and he was transported to hospital but eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Following an investigation, police  believed that foul play was involved in the man’s death.

The VIIMCU took over the investigation, working closely with the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP and the BC Coroners service.

Now, Alphonse has been charged with manslaughter and remains in custody pending his next court appearance.

“We are hoping that this culmination point in this investigation can bring some closure to those involved and affected by this incident” stated Corporal Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the BC RCMP.

Police said no further information would be provided as the case moves to the courts.
