Section of McKenzie Avenue closed following serious motorcycle crash

A section of McKenzie Avenue remains closed Tuesday morning following a two vehicle crash involving a car and motorcycle.

The incident occurred just after 6:30 a.m. this morning in the area of McKenzie Avenue and Arlene Place.

According to Saanich Police, eastbound traffic on McKenzie Avenue is currently closed at Burnside Road. The westbound lane have reopened to traffic.

In a tweet, Saanich Police described the crash as serious.

“It was reported that the motorcyclist, who was travelling eastbound on McKenzie Ave, contacted the rear portion of a vehicle that was turning left from Arelene Place. The impact resulted in the rider being thrown from their motorcycle,” Saanich Police said in a media release.

Several commuters stopped and remained on scene to provide assistance, including an off-duty first responder.

Police said the driver of the vehicle involved is cooperating fully with the investigation.

The motorcyclist was transported to the Victoria General Hospital where their condition is believed to be very serious, but no longer life-threatening.

Saanich Police Collision Analysts are currently on scene and the area is expected to be closed until around 12 p.m. today. Traffic is being diverted onto Burnside Avenue.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
