Shelbourne and McKenzie intersection will be closed this Saturday for paving

Just a heads up motorists!

The intersection of Shelbourne Street at McKenzie Avenue in Saanich will be closed this Saturday for paving as part of the Shelbourne Street Improvements Project.

A detour will be in place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 2nd.

The District of Saanich is warning of significant impact to traffic and suggests motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to avoid the area.

This paving is some of the final work needed to complete the first phase of the project which included the following:

  • Northbound and southbound buffered bike lanes from just south of McKenzie Ave
    to Torquay Dr
  • Replacement of underground utility infrastructure (water, sewer, storm drainage)
  • Replacement of utility service lines (from utility main to property line)
  • Traffic signal additions or upgrades
  • Shelbourne St/Blair Ave signal upgrade from pedestrian activated signal to full traffic signal
  • New full signal at intersection of Cedar Hill Rd and Feltham Rd
  • New full signal at intersection of Shelbourne St and Torquay Dr
  • Rehabilitation and visibility upgrades for other signals
  • Full repaving of roadway including upgrade of any existing areas of weak road base
  • New highly visible reflective road markings and embedded pavement reflectors
  • Sidewalk repairs and upgrades
  • Reduced intersection crossing distances for pedestrians
  • Improved roadway lighting
  • New street trees and landscaping, where space permits
  • Improved bus stops with new shelters and lighting
  • New street furniture – bike locking posts, waste receptacles, benches
  • Rain garden in front of 3941 Shelbourne St

Phase one of the project, which extends from Torquay Road to Garnet Road and is due for completion this month in which phase two will begin.

The next section of the project will extend from Pear Street to North Dairy Road. The third and final from Garnet Road to Pear Street is planned for 2023.

Work being done includes the addition of bike lanes, improvements to underground utilities, upgrades to traffic signals and sidewalks, and repaving.
