A 30-year-old man has succumbed to his injuries following a single-vehicle crash on Mother’s Day in Saanich, according to police.

On Sunday, May 8th at 6:35 p.m., Saanich Police responded to the crash on Cordova Bay Road, west of Ash Road, to find the driver, who had to be extricated by Saanich Fire.

Police say he was rushed to hospital but did not survive. “His family has been advised of his passing,” said Saanich PD, noting the driver was the only occupant of the grey four-door Mitsubishi Lancer.

Upon investigation, police discovered that the vehicle was travelling eastbound when it veered off-road left and struck a large tree head-on.

Investigators are now working to determine the cause of the crash, including factors that led the driver to hit the tree.

The incident prompted Cordova Bay Road between Cedar Hill Road and Westbank Street to be closed off for several hours, later reopening just after midnight on Monday.

“Anyone that may have witnessed the grey Mitsubishi Lancer driving prior to the collision around 6:30 p.m. in the area of Cordova Bay Road is asked to please contact us,” added Const. Markus Anastasiades.

Saanich Police can be reached at (250) 475-4321.

UPDATE: Cordova Bay Road has since reopened. Sadly, one person has died in the single-vehicle crash. More details:…
