The body recovered off Nanaimo’s Protection Island on May 3rd has been positively identified as that of 59-year-old Kent Schroeder.
Schroeder was on board a sailboat in waters between Nanaimo and Protection Island when he went overboard around 8:40 p.m. on April 11th.
A massive search was conducted for him, however, it was later presumed he drowned.
The day of the incident, Nanaimo RCMP had received a call of a woman falling off a sailboat into the water near Commercial Bay, off Newcastle Island.
Information was then received of a man who had also fallen into the water.
Emergency officials found an extremely hypothermic and intoxicated woman clinging to a rope tied to an anchored sailboat.
The woman was lifted onto the Port Authority vessel, then transported to a waiting ambulance where she was taken to hospital to receive emergency medical treatment.
Nanaimo RCMP are canvassing for witnesses that may have observed Schroeder or heard anything suspicious around the Nanaimo harbour on the evening of Monday April 11th.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
