Tips from public help identify purse snatcher at Nanaimo mall food court

Nanaimo RCMP are thanking the public for their help in identifying the person responsible for stealing a purse from a mall food court in early May.

The theft, which took place in the evening of May 2nd at the Country Club Mall in Nanaimo, was caught on surveillance camera which was then shared to the general public.

In the video, the suspect can be seen sneaking up behind the victim then carefully picking up the purse from the back of her chair before walking away with it.

After the footage of the suspect was shared to the public and on social media, tips promptly came in from the public assisting in identifying them. 

“Investigators are confident though the person identified by the general public is responsible for the theft. Investigators were also thoroughly impressed with the promptness and accuracy of the tips provided,” said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

“A big thank you also goes out to the management of the Country Club Mall for having installed excellent CCTV cameras which captured the entire incident.”

At this time, the identity of the suspect has not been released as charges have not been formally laid.

When charges are laid, the name of the individual will be released to the public.
