All relief rebate cheques should be in the mail by end of July: ICBC

Share

Back in March, amid record-high gas prices (which have skyrocketed since), the BC government announced plans to issue a one-time relief rebate to help ease any financial burden.

At the time, Premier John Horgan and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth said most ICBC customers who had a basic auto insurance policy in February would be eligible for a $110 rebate, while commercial customers will receive a rebate of $165.

Overall, ICBC will be sending out roughly 3.5 million relief rebate payments.

At the time, it was promised drivers would see the relief payment in May if they are registered for direct deposit with ICBC or as a refund to their credit card, with all other customers receiving cheques in June.

However, in an email statement to Victoria Buzz today, a spokesperson for ICBC said they were on track to have all cheques in the mail by the end of July as planned.

To date, ICBC have issued 25,000 rebates to customers who signed up for direct deposit and 573,000 received a rebate on their credit card.

As for cheques, this is where the problem seems to be for most ICBC customers.

According to the insurance corporation, they only began issuing rebate cheques in June, with just 260,000 being issued as of this publication.

The auto insurer said another 200,000 cheques are scheduled to go out this week.

The relief rebate is expected to cost the government $395 million, $142 million of that has been distributed to date. It follows two COVID-19 rebates issued by ICBC last year, which provided drivers with a combined average of $300.
