A sunny weekend of dragon boating ended in gloom this weekend, after an irate motorist bear-sprayed two boaters on their way back to their vehicle.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. on July 10th on Cliff Street near Terminal Avenue. Police and paramedics quickly arrived on scene to treat the two victims.

According to the victims, a couple in their early 60’s, they were walking back to their vehicle when another vehicle driving by slowed and the driver began to berate them for walking in the middle of the road.

The male pedestrian responded that there were no sidewalks and it was a relatively quiet street before continuing on their way.

However, seconds later, the same driver returned and began to discharge bear-spray directly at them.

The male victim took the brunt of it in his face, with his wife got some on her lips.

The driver fled and was last seen driving westbound.

A witness managed to take a picture of the license plate with his cell phone and provided it to police.

The suspect driver is described as Caucasian, mid to late 20’s, driving an older model silver compact car.

The victims were unable to provide a description of the suspect’s clothing.

Police have followed up with the registered owner of the vehicle who deny any knowledge of the incident.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP at (250) 754-2345.
