VicPD and GVERT work to de-escalate man with self-inflicted neck injury

A man has been injured after barricading himself in a Victoria residence for hours Saturday night.

Police say they were called to a home in the 900-block of Mason Street at around 6:30 p.m. after a person in crisis harmed themselves and refused medical attention.

When officers arrived on scene, the man barricaded himself inside a residence. Police then learned he was suffering from a self-inflicted neck injury.

Officers, along with members of Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT), and a Crisis negotiator spent hours working to verbally de-escalate the man.

Two loud distraction devices were deployed by GVERT in an effort to have the person surrender themselves for medical care.

“Just after 10 p.m. the person armed themselves with a weapon and attempted to engage officers at the front door of the residence,” VicPD said in a media release.

According to the Victoria Police Department spokesperson Bowen Osoko, officers deployed ARWEN less-lethal munitions, disarmed the person and took them into custody without further incident.

The man was treated on scene by a VicPD Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS) officer until paramedics attended and transported the injured man to hospital for medical evaluation and mental health care.

His injuries were considered non-life-threatening.
