Fall has arrived and with that comes the windstorms.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather warning for eastern part of Vancouver Island for most of the day Thursday.

The warning is in effect for Courtenay to Campbell River, and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay near the Straight of Georgia.

Southeast winds 60 gusting to 80 km/h are expected. The weather agency is warning the high winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches.

It is expected to last into Thursday afternoon.

Light winds gust are currently occurring in Victoria and Saanich Peninsula area, but no wind warning has been issued for the Greater Victoria area.

On Wednesday, BC Hydro issued a warning of a challenging storm season ahead due to the drought conditions.

The utility company said the drought may have weakened structural roots of trees which may make them more susceptible to wind.

According to Environment Canada, rain and cloudy days are slated for the next week.

As of this publication, there are nearly 6,000 BC Hydro customers without service on Vancouver Island.
