A pedestrian was hit by a moving vehicle while crossing the street in Nanaimo this past weekend

Nanaimo RCMP are investigating the incident after a 25-year-old woman was struck while crossing the street on Highway 19A at a legally marked crosswalk that leads to Terminal Park Mall.

The collision occurred around 8:30 p.m. and Fire, paramedics and police were quick to arrive on the scene and assess the victim.

Police say she was transported to the Nanaimo hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

According to RCMP, their preliminary evidence such as dash cam footage and witness statements suggest that the victim and her friend were legally walking through the marked crosswalk when she was struck by a northbound vehicle.

The vehicle that allegedly struck the pedestrian was a newer model SUV and was being driven by a woman in her late 20s who remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Police say that alcohol consumption has been ruled out as a cause of this incident but they have not yet ruled out distracted driving as a contributing factor at this time.

The SUV involved was towed for a full mechanical inspection.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
