Saanich Police identify body of man found near Lochside Trail last Thursday

Last Thursday, a body was found near the Lochside Regional Trail and Saanich Police have since been trying to identify the body.

Police say the body was determined to be missing person, Timothy Mackness.

Mackness was reported missing to VicPD on September 26th and was determined to be a ‘high-risk’ individual. 

The search for the missing 59-year-old man was passed along to Saanich Police because according to his last reported sighting, Mackness had been last seen near Quadra Street and McKenzie Avenue in Saanich.

“Initially, the Victoria Police were responsible for this investigation, however as new facts were presented, it was later determined that Mackness was last seen in Saanich,”said Det.-Sgt. Damian Kowalewich of the Saanich Police department.

On October 6th, a section of Lochside Trail behind Saanich Centre, between Quadra Street and Mckenzie Avenue was closed off while the Saanich Police Dive Unit and emergency crews retrieved a body from the creek below.

This Thursday afternoon the body was identified as the missing 59-year-old, Timothy Mackness.

Police say they have determined his death is not considered suspicious at this time.

“Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr. Mackness. At this point, the BC Coroners Service will assume conduct of the file,” said D/Sgt. Damian Kowalewich.
