Santa Claus is coming to town and VicPD will ensure no ‘naughty’ activities happen during the parade.

With parades, comes thousands of people and VicPD will be on hand during the 40th annual Peninsula Co-op Santa Claus Parade through downtown Victoria on Saturday, November 26th.

Given that the parade has a new route this year due to Government Street’s permanent closure to traffic, road closures in the area will also be different than years past.

Here are the roads that will be closed during the parade:

  • Belleville Street, between Douglas Street and Menzies Street, from approximately 2:30 p.m. to approximately 7:30 p.m.
  • Government Street, between Humboldt Street and Superior Street, from approximately 2:30 p.m. to approximately 7:30 p.m.

Police say that street parking will remain available throughout downtown Victoria in advance of the parade, however it will be limited.

“Traffic will be disrupted in downtown Victoria during the parade,” said Cst. Bowen Osoko in a media release regarding traffic closures.

“Our officers will be working to keep everyone attending the parade safe.”

VicPD say they will keep commuters updated on traffic disruptions via their twitter account on the day of the parade.

In addition to the road closures, police will also be installing CCTV cameras along the route to deter mischief and ensure public safety.

“As with previous events, we will be deploying our temporary-placed, monitored CCTV cameras in support of our operations to ensure public safety and help maintain traffic flow,” said Osoko.

“The deployment of these cameras is part of our operations to help keep the event safe, peaceful and family-friendly and is in keeping with both provincial and federal privacy laws.”

The cameras will be taken down after the events of the parade have concluded.

Police also want to remind the public that the use of drones during the parade is not permitted.

VicPD says that this is due to the inner harbour being an active flight zone for float planes and helicopters. Because of this, drones are strictly prohibited under Transport Canada’s authority.
