Popular restaurant in Tofino destroyed by overnight fire (VIDEO)

A popular restaurant of 20 years in Tofino was destroyed after a devastating fire that occurred in the early hours Thursday.

Shelter Restaurant, located on Campbell Street, went up in flames at around 1 a.m. on December 22nd.

A video posted on Twitter shows the eatery completely engulfed in flames as firefighters tackled the blaze.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported and while the cause of the fire remains unknown, it is believed to have started in the kitchen.

The restaurant released a statement Thursday afternoon confirming the restaurant was completely destroyed by the fire.

“We don’t know what caused the fire yet. But we do know that no one was in the building at the time, there were no injuries and the fire did not spread. For all of the, we are relieved and grateful,” read the statement.

“Shelter is more than a business, we’re a close knit family. We know how stressful this new is for our team, but we will get through this difficult time together.”

The beloved eatery is described as a contemporary timber house with a patio serving elevated bistro fare sourced from local purveyors.
