Catalytic converter theft in Sidney is getting out of hand: Sidney RCMP

Share

There has been an increase of catalytic converter thefts from vehicles in Sidney and on the Saanich Peninsula.

Sidney/North Saanich RCMP have since put out a warning to the public about the uptick in this type of thefts in which perpetrators will remove the catalytic converter from a vehicle’s exhaust system.

In the process, vehicles have been getting badly damaged during the theft, police say.

According to Sidney/North Saanich RCMP, catalytic converters contain precious metals that can be sold for scrap for a large return.

Triangle RV Centre, located on the industrial side of Sidney, is one such site that recently fell victim to catalytic converter theft.

Here are two VERY clear pictures of the truck that is suspected of involvement in catalytic converter theft. Please call the RCMP if you see it.

The company took to social media with photos of the suspect truck involved and urged people to call police if seen.

“Here are two very clear pictures of the truck that is suspected of involvement in catalytic converter theft. Please call the RCMP if you see it,” the Facebook post read.

Police say that a thief selling these parts will only make a portion of the costs the vehicle’s owner will have to pay or the insurance company will be responsible for.

“We have increased patrols in areas where these thefts have occurred but we are also asking the public to be vigilant in where they park their vehicles,” said Cpl.l Andres Sanchez of the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP.

According to police, the best place to park your vehicle is an area that is illuminated overnight and when possible, a fenced in or enclosed area or parking lot.

Police are asking the public for any information which may help identify the people responsible for these thefts.

Both victims and those who may have information should call Sidney/North Saanich RCMP at (250) 656-3931.

Or to report anonymously, call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
