Footage captures mattress precariously strapped to car roof before flying off into Sooke traffic (VIDEO)

Shocking footage captured on camera shows a mattress precariously strapped to the roof of a car travelling on Sooke Road before flying into traffic.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Sunday in the four lane section of Sooke Road.

Ryan Bunyan, who captured the video, tells Victoria Buzz that the mattress was strapped to a double kayak holder and ripped it off of the car.

“If they strapped it to car would have probably been ok. You can see in video it rips it all off the roof,” said Bunyan.

The vehicle in question can then be seen making a sharp U-turn, presumably to circle back and pick up the lost cargo.

Bunyan said the mattress landed in the middle of the left turning lane which is fortunate as oncoming traffic could be seen approaching around the turn.

While no reports of this incident were made to police, Nancy Saggar of the West Shore RCMP told Victoria Buzz that traffic investigators are looking into the incident.

The fine for having an unsecured load starts at $288 for non-commercial vehicles, and $173 for commercial.

The mattress owner could be in for a ‘rough’ sleep after this incident.
