RCMP have confirmed they’re investigating the discovery of a person’s body found on a Nanaimo road Friday morning.

It is believed they were struck by a passing vehicle.

Nanaimo RCMP identified the deceased person as a 34-year-old Caucasian man of no fixed address. His family were notified of his death.

While details are slim, a section of Harewood Mines Road was closed for several hours while police investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

On Friday, January 27th,  police say a passerby on their morning walk around 7 a.m. discovered the deceased person roadside on the north side of Harewood Mines Road, just south of the overpass.

The person called police immediately and the area was closed to allow for the body and scene to be examined by several specialized units of the Nanaimo RCMP.

“Investigators stated that while it is early in the investigation, the injuries of the deceased are consistent with being struck by a motor vehicle,” said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson.

“It appears injuries may be consistent with being struck by a vehicle.”

RCMP are hoping for information from anyone who may have seen a person in dark clothing walking in that area in the night or early morning.

Several possible witnesses have reached out to RCMP with information related to the incident.

Anyone with information or dashcam video is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
