A man has been arrested after a person was stabbed to death in a parking lot of a Nanaimo mall Sunday night.

The stabbing occurred in the parking lot of Port Place Mall in the 600-block of Terminal Avenue.

The incident occurred at around 7 p.m. on January 22nd, in the vicinity of London Drugs.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, the victim walked into the Port Place Mall with an apparent stab wound.

Bystanders rendered first aid to the victim until emergency crews could arrive.

The victim was transported to Nanaimo General Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Police say a adult male was arrested in connection the stabbing and taken into police custody.

“An area of the Mall and parking lot was closed for several hours to allow investigators time to examine the scene and collect forensic evidence,” Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson Const. Gary O’Brien said in a media release.

“As the investigation is only in the preliminary stages, it is too early to say what, if any, relationship existed between the victim and suspect.”

The area was released later that same evening.

In addition, police are seeking motorists with dash cameras who were driving past Port Place Mall or through the mall parking lot between 6:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. that evening to contact the Nanaimo Serious Crime Unit.

Police said they are not looking for any other suspects and there is no further risk to the public.

Anyone who may have witnessed the stabbing or who has video of the attack is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
