‘Out of an abundance of caution’: Oak Bay library temporarily closed for asbestos testing

Share

The District of Oak Bay is doing proactive testing for asbestos in the Oak Bay library.

Dust containing asbestos has been detected at the Oak Bay branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) at the Monterey Recreation Centre.

“The District’s top priority is ensuring the safety of staff and the community,” said the District of Oak Bay in a statement.

“Therefore, out of an abundance of caution, the Oak Bay Branch of Greater Victoria Public Library will be closed until Monday, February 6, 2023 while the District conducts further testing.”

In addition to the library’s doors being closed, the book drop will also be closed until February 6th, but library members can drop their books at any other GVPL location.

Oak Bay says the library is the only area that requires testing at this time.

All adjacent areas of the Monterey Recreation Centre, including the Volunteer Services Society and the Hampshire Apartments will be unaffected by the asbestos testing.

The District will provide further updates following the completion of additional testing.

For questions and concerns, the GVPL customer service line can be reached at 250-940-4875. Their business hours are Monday through Saturday between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
