View Royal shoplifter hides in dumpster after threating grocery store staff with screwdriver

A man attempting to leave a grocery store in View Royal with a cart full of stolen groceries threatened staff with a screwdriver when they confronted him.

In a media release, West Shore RCMP says officers were dispatched to the Quality Foods on Helmken Road following reports that a man was brandishing a screwdriver and attempting to flee the store without paying for the groceries in his cart.

Police said they were on scene within minutes of receiving the call and learned that the suspect was attempting to leave the store with a cart full of unpaid groceries.

When staff confronted the suspect, he brandished a screwdriver and threatened the staff with it. The staff were physically unharmed this incident.

The 34-year-old suspect fled the store on foot and wound up jumping into a large dumpster nearby in an apparent attempt to hide from police.

He was eventually located and was arrested for robbery without further incident. He has been remanded into custody until January 30th.
