A 22-year-old man has suffered serious and possibly life threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle on the Trans Canada Highway (HWY 1) in Saanich today.

The crash occurred just before 10:30 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of the Trans Canada Highway and Tillicum Road in the southbound lanes.

The southbound traffic has been diverted down Tillicum Road since the crash occurred while the Saanich Police Traffic Safety Unit investigate.

Police say the initial investigation has revealed that a red Toyota Prius struck a 22 year-old male pedestrian who suffered serious and possibly life threatening injuries.

The driver of the vehicle involved remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

Several people who live in the area told Victoria Buzz they could hear a woman screaming as paramedics tended to an injured person.

“I was a witness, two people were jay walking across the highway and one was hit. They were tossed in the air – it was awful,” said a tipster who asked to remain anonymous.

“It was totally senseless and awful to see. I feel awful for the driver that hit the person.”

Traffic in the area is expected to be affected until approximately 2 p.m. this afternoon.

“There is information circulating on social media relating to the circumstances that may have caused this collision.   As the investigation is still in the early stages, we are not in a position to confirm this information until all witnesses have provided their information to our investigators,” said Saanich Police.
