On January 22nd, a man was fatally stabbed in the parking lot of Nanaimo’s Port Place Mall.

At around 7 p.m. on Sunday January 22nd, Nanaimo RCMP, firefighters and paramedics attended the scene at the mall after they received reports of a man with a stab wound entering the shopping centre.

Police say that he was stabbed in the mall parking lot near the London Drugs.

Bystanders gave the man first aid until emergency crews could arrive then the victim was transported to Nanaimo General Hospital.

The victim, Serguei Chiliakhov, was later pronounced dead at the hospital after he had succumbed to his wounds.

Soon after the incident occurred, police arrested Sean Patterson for stabbing Chiliakhov.

Patterson has now had charges officially laid against him for second-degree murder and is scheduled to appear in court on February 16th.

“Given that this matter is now before the courts, police will not be providing any additional information with regards to the investigation,” said Cst. Tanaska Armstrong of the Nanaimo RCMP.
