In the early hours of Monday morning, February 6th, Nanaimo RCMP located and arrested the 39-year-old suspect for assault with a weapon.

An argument in a Nanaimo mall parking lot ended with one person in the hospital due to an axe attack this past weekend.

On Saturday, February 4th at around 5 p.m. in the parking lot of Port Place Mall, two adults got into an argument that escalated to an altercation that Nanaimo RCMP, paramedics and firefighters all attended.

Police say witnesses reported that the victim and suspect knew each other and had been seen arguing prior to the incident.

Following the initial argument, the suspect approached the 30-year-old victim and struck them in the head with the blunt end of an axe before fleeing the scene of the altercation on foot, according to police.

A bail hearing is expected to be held on February 6th in the evening where charges will be formally laid against the suspect.

The victim was transported to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. As of Monday, February 6th, they are still in hospital being treated for their injuries.

Police ask that anyone who has information on this incident, contact Nanaimo RCMP at (250) 754-2345.
