Commuters travelling in areas of downtown Victoria this Monday should expect delays or detours near the Parliament building.

On February 6th, the BC Legislative Assembly will convene for the annual Throne Speech delivered by the Honourable Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia.

Prior to the Throne Speech’s delivery, Belleville Avenue will be closed temporarily while festivities such as a 15 gun salute and a guard inspection occur.

VicPD say the 500-block of Belleville Street will be closed between around 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. while Menzies Street between Belleville Street and Superior Street will be closed between approximately 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

“As with previous events, we are deploying temporarily placed, monitored CCTV cameras in the area in accordance with provincial and federal privacy laws,” said Cst. Terri Healy, Community Engagement Officer for VicPD.

“These cameras are utilized to support our operations to ensure public safety and help maintain traffic flow.”

The cameras will be taken down following the Throne Speech and its events, according to the police.

This will be David Eby’s first throne speech as BC Premier. With only 20 months left before the next election, Eby will likely give details into what the British Columbians can expect from him before the next voting day.
