Drill weighing nearly 15,000 lbs falls off transport truck into Malahat traffic on Thursday

A potentially deadly and expensive mistake took place on the Trans-Canada Highway this Thursday.

On March 2nd, at around 11:30 a.m., northbound traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway near Aspen Road was reduced to one lane for nearly two hours because an industrial drill bit had fallen off the back of a moving truck.

According to West Shore RCMP,  the drill bit fell due to its straps loosening.

The 18-foot long drill bit weighed between 10,000 and 15,000 pounds so special equipment had to be brought in to remove it from the highway.

“Fortunately, no one was injured, and no vehicles were damaged,” said Cst. Andrew Matheson, Media Relations Officer, West Shore RCMP in a statement.

Police said the transport truck driver remained on scene and was ticketed for an insecure load under the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations.
