Saanich Police are looking to identify an individual accused of stealing thousands of dollars using an elaborate text scam.
The fraud suspect was caught on a bank surveillance security camera in November 2022.
The older looking man was responsible for fraudulently accessing the victims bank account and withdrew money from it to the total of $14,000.
According to a Facebook post by the Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers (GVCS), the victim responded to a fake text message purporting to be ICBC. They sent their bank details to the fraudster who then was able to gain access to the victim’s accounts and steal the money.
“Remember NEVER send any bank or personal details to unsolicited text messages or emails If you receive one and are unsure contact the party, they claim to be directly to answer the request,” said GVCRS.
In an email statement to Victoria Buzz, Const. Markus Anastasiades said this is a common fraud.
“We get at least one of these similar type frauds every day.”
According to Anastasiades, the victims of this fraud clicked a link, and then provided personal information over, which allowed the fraudster to gain access to their bank accounts.
“Last year it was reported to SPD approximately $6 million in money lost,” said Anastasiades.
