Group of paddlers looking to raise funds for children with disabilities in Victoria

The Victoria Canoe and Kayak Club (VCKC) is just weeks away from launching a fleet of Big Canoes in Brentwood Bay.

Marking its 42nd year, the Paddle for Kids fundraiser is working hard to reach a $20,000 goal to help support Easter Seals Camp Shawnigan, which serves as a supportive service for children with disabilities.

This year, the fleet of 60 VCKC members will take to the water on April 1st for a unique sight.

Starting at the Tsartlip Band Boat ramp, the big canoes will traverse the Saanich Inlet and along the Saanich Peninsula coast, where they will finish their 80 km relay just in time for sunset at the Victoria Canoe and Kayak Club.

Over the years, this event has become well-known for participant diversity. This year specifically, paddlers range from 20 to 90 years of age.

Since the first paddle for kids event launched in 1982, VCKC has since raised $380,000 to support Camp Shawnigan.

In addition to this weekend’s event, members of VCKC will continue to fundraise throughout March, April and early May.

For those looking to support the cause, the VCKC is currently accepting donations online.
