Following a fire in Nanaimo on Sunday, March 26th, investigators found a body amongst the abandoned building’s wreckage.

Just after midnight on Sunday, a Nanaimo RCMP officer spotted smoke coming from a building located at 85 Wallace Street. They notified firefighters and crews arrived within minutes, according to police.

After the blaze was extinguished, investigators searched the building for victims and found the remains of one adult within.

The scene was then secured by officers and forensic investigators began examining the scene for potential evidence.

“While it is only early in the investigation and considerable investigation is required, there is nothing to suggest at this time that foul play is involved,” said Reserve Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Police are aware of the building which is known to be a place where marginalized people have been sheltering with some incidents stemming from the property.

The deceased has not yet been identified, but an autopsy is expected to occur in the near future as investigators with Nanaimo RCMP and the BC Coroners Service work to identify the body.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at (250) 754-2345.
