Island Health announces new phone line for mental health and substance use supports

Share

Island Health has launched a new phone line dedicated to supporting those in need of mental health and substance use support.

The new telephone number also known as the Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) Service Link aids those in need of support with access to information and services within the communities in which users reside.

People seeking information can phone 1-888-885-8824 seven days a week to speak directly with a call taker.

For those using the phone line, Island Health says the call takers are not trained in emotional support or crisis intervention.

“Health care plays a crucial role in connecting people who use substances with the resources they need to achieve better health outcomes,”said Island Health in a press release.

“Service Link helps people navigate and connect to the right resources, including harm reduction services, drug-poisoning prevention, addiction medicine (opioid agonist therapy, prescribed safer supply and other medication options), withdrawal management, and treatment and recovery services.”

In the case of an immediate mental health or substance-related crisis, those requiring urgent support should call the Vancouver Island Crisis line at 1-888-494-3888.
