Nanaimo RCMP have arrested a man in connection with a shooting that took place on March 12th, when a group of people went to a homeless encampment to retrieve stolen property.

The encampment was situated near Millstone River, just below Terminal Avenue and in the attempt to get the stolen property back, one man was shot and seriously injured in the altercation.

The 49-year old victim was taken to hospital following the incident with a gunshot to the stomach that paramedics considered to be a serious but non-life threatening injury.

Police reviewed numerous videos, witness statements and dashcam footage in relation to the incident and moved forward with the investigation this past weekend by arresting one individual.

Nanaimo RCMP say 37-year-old Craig Truckle was arrested on March 22nd in downtown Nanaimo at around 11 p.m. without incident.

The next day, charges were laid against him for “point firearm without lawful excuse.”

Truckle is to appear in Nanaimo Provincial Court this Tuesday, March 28th.

A publication ban has been put in place on this incident and therefore no further information can be released, according to Nanaimo RCMP.
