Comox Valley RCMP are aiding the Joint Search and Rescue Centre (JRCC) in the search for a missing 37-year-old man and his rowboat.

At around 7:30 a.m. on Friday, March 17th, the Comox Valley RCMP received a report of an unmanned rowboat floating in ocean waters near Royston.

JRCC search and rescue crews were deployed to the area to search for anyone who may have been aboard the vessel, but they were unable to even locate the rowboat.

Later on that morning, Christopher Mitchell, a 37-year-old man from the Royston area was reported missing and had reportedly been on his way to take out his rowboat the night before.

JRCC crews deployed additional crews to broaden the search at this point but they could still not even locate the rowboat along the shoreline. They had additional help from Coast Guard Auxiliary and Ground Search and Rescue.

Mitchell and his boat were not located over the weekend.

“The efforts to locate the missing man could be narrowed down by locating the row boat,” said Cst. Monika Terragni, Media Relations Officer, Comox Valley RCMP.

“The row boat is blue, between 14-16 feet long, made of fibreglass and has a square back”.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of 37-year old Christopher Mitchell or a boat matching the description provided should call Comox Valley RCMP at (250) 338-1321.
