There’s an app for that: BC Ferries launches new app to manage bookings

BC Ferries has launched a new official app for customers to be able to have a more convenient way of booking and managing their trips.

The app was designed with “convenience and personalization in mind,” so travellers can focus on what they need from BC Ferries and remove all the white noise.

App features include booking sailings, seeing schedules and current conditions, receiving alerts and managing sailings.

The new app will also send notifications when your trip is delayed or if a ‘trip advisory’ is put in place due to weather conditions, staff shortages or mechanical failures.

“The app is about giving customers the tools needed to enhance their trip-planning experience through their mobile device,” said Janet Carson, Vice President, Marketing and Customer Experience.

“The BC Ferries app is the latest enhancement to our online services following the rollout of the new website in 2020 and a new Saver fare structure in 2021.”

Some say the BC Ferries website can be tricky to traverse and has a lot of extra features that can cause confusion for those who do not use their website frequently, so the new app is a handy new tool for those seeking simplicity.

In August 2022, an independent, third-party created an app called ‘BC Ferry Times’ which was made available for free, but only for iPhone users via the Apple Store.

BC Ferry Times would not allow for people to manage their trips or book their sailings, but it did allow travellers to see how full the sailings were in real-time. The app was created because creator Samuel Pratt thought BC Ferries website was too difficult to navigate.

At the time of the third-party app’s launch, BC Ferries was planning on having their own app ready for use by the end of 2022. The launch was delayed but the results are welcome in the eyes of many ferry commuters.

The official BC Ferries app is available through the Google Play store or the Apple Store
