Environment Canada issues 90 km/h wind warning for Greater Victoria area

Share

In case you hadn’t noticed, Victoria—it’s windy out there!

The strongest winds are expected to occur near the water and will continue from now until late afternoon. Southeast winds are predicted to reach 70 km/h with gusts up to 90 km/h.

According to Environment Canada, these high winds are the result of a frontal system moving through Vancouver Island, which is generating strong winds across Juan de Fuca Strait and Haro Strait.

As the system moves through, winds will continue to rise and peak near 70 km/h with gusts up to 90 km/h. However, winds are expected to abate late this afternoon as the frontal system weakens.

The weather warning also warns that high winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break. There is also a possibility of utility outages. Therefore, it is important to be prepared for these potential hazards.

As of this publication, the forecast indicates that it will be mostly cloudy with a chance of rain throughout the week. Temperatures will range from 7°C to 11°C. The wind is predicted to subside after this afternoon, with the remaining days of the week having moderate winds ranging from 10-25 km/h.

Interestingly enough, tomorrow’s weather is suggesting there is a potential of a thunderstorm in the afternoon, however, we know those usually don’t pan out.
