Victoria firefighters are being credited with saving a family cat last week after it suffered smoke inhalation from Fairfield house fire.

At around 7:15 p.m., on April 18th, Victoria firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire in the 1100 block of Woodstock Avenue in Fairfield.

Fire crews arrived on scene to find smoke billowing out from a second-story window.

Fortunately, the fire was contained to an upstairs bedroom, thanks in part to the quick thinking of the resident who closed the door, preventing the fire from spreading.

The fire was quickly extinguished, and overhaul operations began.

Once it was confirmed that there were no residents inside the home, firefighters turned their attention to searching for the resident’s pet cat, which was eventually found. However, it was apparent that the cat had been exposed to smoke for some time.

“Luckily, the cat was found quickly, however it was obvious that the beloved pet had spent sometime in the smoke-filled environment,” the Victoria Fire Department wrote on an Instagram post.

Firefighters administered oxygen using an O2 Pet Therapy mask and the feline rebounded, a specialized device many Greater Victoria departments carry for animals.

This valuable piece of equipment allowed the cat received oxygen to help it recover.

“Our thoughts are with the resident and her family as they recover from this terrible incident.”
