Uber takes backseat while Uride moves in on Victoria looking for drivers

Uber has long been teasing Greater Victoria with the prospect of coming to town, much to the local cabbies dismay.

Now, a new kid on the ridesharing block has announced its intention to launch in the city and they are on the prowl for drivers.

Uride boasts that they are the fastest growing rideshare company in Canada. The company was started in 2017 in Thunder Bay, Ontario and just six years later they operate out of 12 cities across BC and Ontario, including Nanaimo, Prince George, Kelowna, Vernon and Kamloops.

The company has had their eye on BC capital for a while and now they are pulling the trigger on looking for drivers.

Back in September of last year the company similarly held hiring sessions but were unable to launch ahead of the off-season in Victoria.

This time around, Uride is going to be giving away $10,000 as a giveaway to split between two drivers who sign up to work for Uride and they are offering a $1,000 sign-on bonus if they are able to drive part-time.

Full-timers who are able to sign-on to the company’s ‘All-Star Program’ will be promised $1,750 as a weekly minimum guarantee.

Uride is also offering to pay for any costs associated with becoming a driver for them. They said they’ll pay for most startup costs, which includes licensing upgrades, commercial vehicle inspections, background checks and city licensing fees.

Drivers who want to drive under the Uride banner for some extra cash can attend the company’s driver information sessions at theDock – Centre for Social Impact, located at 722 Cormorant Street. These sessions will take place on:

  • Tuesday, May 2nd from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 am
  • Wednesday, May 3rd from 12 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, May 4th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Uride is looking for drivers who are at least 19-years-old, have a clean criminal record and hold a Class 1, 2, or 4 license.

All that is left is for them to secure some drivers and for the folks who live in Victoria to download their app and they will never have to wait 45 minutes for a cab that was supposed to be there in 15 minutes ever again.
