Vancouver Island’s largest Vaisakhi celebration is taking place in Victoria this month and organizers are expecting to draw one of its biggest crowds yet.

Vaisakhi is a significant festival for the Sikh community, celebrated with great enthusiasm and zeal around the world.

Khalsa Day celebrations, organized by Gurdwara Singh Sabha, will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 30th, which includes a Nagar Kirtan, Sikh Procession.

The Gurdwara Singh Sabha Victoria has been organizing this event for many years, and each year it has seen the attendee numbers grow. This year, organizers expect at least 5,000 attendees from across the island and the Lower Mainland to participate.

The Sikh community is known for its charitable nature, and in the spirit of Vaisakhi, the Gurdwara Singh Sabha Victoria will be preparing meals for 500 people to be delivered to OurPlace Society on the same day.

Additionally, the Gurdwara will also be making donations to local charities.

Vaisakhi is celebrated to commemorate the birth of the Khalsa, or the Sikh Nation, as revealed by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, in 1699.

The celebrations will be open to all and the gurdwara’s kitchen, at 470 Cecelia Road, will offer a free meal to attendees.
