A driver experiencing a “medical event” was pulled from his vehicle in Port Alberni’s Roger Creek by a good samaritan who had witnessed the vehicle go off the bridge.

At around 5:30 p.m. on Monday May 1st, Port Alberni responded to a call that a vehicle had gone off the road and into Roger Creek from Gertrude Street.

When police got there they found the vehicle in several feet of water just below the bridge. Paramedics with the Port Alberni Fire Department were on scene tending to the driver.

According to police, the driver who had a car full of three youths experienced a medical event and tried to pull over near the bridge. The vehicle however, continued over the embankment and into the creek.

Police say the three youth passengers were able to escape the car before it entered the water. Officers were surprised that none of the youths sustained any serious injuries in the event.

The driver was reportedly still in the vehicle when it entered the water, but a good samaritan witnessed this and went waist-deep into the creek and successfully pulled them to shore.

“The selfless acts that were displayed by those who stopped to help show what our small town is about,” stated Constable Richard Johns.

Paramedics treated all four of the vehicle’s occupants before transporting them to a nearby hospital.

According to police, the Ministry of Environment was contacted promptly to ensure the protection of the waters.

Police say there were no fluids spilled into the creek during or after this incident.
