Man arrested after vigilant neighbour thwarts theft of boat trailer in Nanaimo

Police are crediting a vigilant neighbour for thwarting a theft in progress that also lead to a a drugs and weapons charge.

On Monday, May 22nd, Nanaimo RCMP said they were called to the 600 block of Georgia Avenue just after 6:30 a.m. after a neighbour spotted two people carrying a boat trailer down a nearby alleyway.

The witness told police the situation didn’t sit right with him so he reported the incident to the police who were on scene within minutes.

After a brief struggle, the two suspects were arrested for the theft.

During a search of one of the suspects backpacks, police located several loaded .22 calibre rifles and ammunition.

They also confiscated a small amount of drugs suspected to be crack cocaine.

36-year-old Daniel Kipp from Nanaimo, and of no fixed address, was returned to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment to await a bail hearing.

Later that day, he was charged with one count of possessing a prohibited weapon and remanded into police custody.  His next court appearance is set for May 23rd, in Nanaimo Provincial Court.

The second person involved was released and the trailer was returned to its owner.
