New build home in Sooke destroyed by intense blaze Tuesday evening (VIDEO)

Four structures in a new housing development were burnt to the ground on the evening of Tuesday, May 2nd. 

At around 8:55 p.m., Sooke Fire Rescue Department along with firefighters from Otter Point, Metchosin and East Sooke responded to the Steeple Chase construction site just off Church Hill Drive. 

When firefighters arrived at the scene of the blaze, four structures were fully engulfed in flames, according to Sooke Fire Chief Ted Ruiter.

“Public safety and minimizing damage to the nearby occupied residents was our priority,” said Ruiter. 

“Thank you to our dedicated team and mutual aid partners for their quick response, and to the community for their support and cooperation.”

‼️ Sooke Fire Rescue Department are currently battling a large fire on Steeple Chase, off Church Hill Drive. The fire is in a new-build home that is still under construction. Fire crews are asking people to avoid the area as additional firefighters arrive on scene. The cause of the fire and injuries are unknown at this time. More videos and photos in the comment section. There were 30 firefighters on the scene to aid in extinguishing the intense fire and they had assistance from paramedics as well as Sooke RCMP who aided in evacuating some nearby residents from their homes temporarily. 

Firefighters say the blaze was under control around an hour after they had gotten to the construction site at 9:50 p.m. 

As of Wednesday, May 3rd, a District of Sooke spokesperson says that fire crews will remain at the scene throughout the day and an investigation as to the cause of the fire is underway.

“Thank you doesn’t seem to suffice,” said Sooke Mayor Maja Tait. “My heartfelt gratitude goes out to our first responders including Sooke Fire and our mutual aid partners, Sooke RCMP and BC Ambulance and your families.” 

“The quick action of our emergency response teams prevented something that could have been a truly catastrophic event.”
